Steven trained as a molecular immunologist before joining the Sanger Institute in 1993 as one of the first 5 scientists on the human genome project. He transferred into a university spin-out which grew to become a global PLC taking on a variety of technical roles before transitioning into commerce. In 2008, he took on a strategic role in Scottish economic development, identifying what would become known as digital health as a critical emerging sector, lobbying successfully at the national level for its inclusion in the national life since strategy. Steven founded the consultancy and networking organisation D Health in 2013, through which he has worked with leading digital health companies from Europe and the US. In 20017, he founded the corporate working group in digital health; a forum for executives from multinationals to explore the diverse aspects of digital health, drawing executives from pharma, insurance, retail, telecoms, technology, etc. In reaction to the COVID crisis, Steven has launched the Digital Health Virtual Network; a virtual event series to promote networking in the European digital health community.
